Antibacterial Wrap Reduces Pacemaker, Defibrillator Infection

April 14, 2010

An antibacterial wrap for implanted pacemakers and defibrillators is designed to provide protection against infections. The AigisRx Flat delivers the antimicrobial agents rifampin and minocycline.

The device supplements the antimicrobial AigisRx envelope, in which electrophysiology devices are enclosed in prior to implantation. The envelope also anchors the device to prevent migration.

In patients who are undergoing battery change-outs, the AigisRx Flat option helps minimize dissection of the pre-existing pocket. The drug-eluting material can be placed over the exposed areas of the device to reduce the chance of infections.

The device was released in the United States in April 2010.
