Canon Medical Launches Healthy Sonographer Program

Educational program aims to help prevent sonographer injuries while enhancing patient care and reducing costs

Canon Medical Launches Healthy Sonographer Program

October 10, 2018 — Canon Medical Systems USA Inc. launched an all-new program designed to help reduce the leading causes of pain and injury for sonographers from work-related musculoskeletal disorders, which afflict up to 90 percent of clinical sonographers.1 The Healthy Sonographer Program aims to educate sonographers about best practices to prevent positioning themselves in awkward postures – including reaching and twisting – which can result in injuries to the shoulders, neck and wrists and can be a detriment to patient engagement.

Canon Medical consulted with Sound Ergonomics, which provides ergonomic accessories and services for radiology, to cultivate the new program, which includes:

  • Free education events – to instruct sonographers about the ideal positioning to help prevent long-term injuries, improve patient engagement and reduce costs to the provider that can arise when a sonographer is injured; CME credits can also be received upon completion;
  • HealthySonographer.com – a resource website where sonographers can learn best practices from the experts by watching videos, reading published articles on the topic and learn stretches and exercises ideal for reducing sonographer injury.

Canon Medical’s Aplio i-series, The Healthy Sonographer Platform, including the Aplio i600, Aplio i700, Aplio i800 and Aplio i900, are the ideal ultrasound systems for a well-positioned sonographer, according to the company. With Adaptive Ergonomics that include over 36 cm panel height adjustment, lateral slide and a fully articulating monitor arm — as well as the Remote Access Second Console, which allows you to remotely operate the system from a wireless tablet — sonographers can adjust the console to an optimal scanning position. The systems and the Healthy Sonographer Program/Movement were presented at this year’s Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) annual meeting, Oct. 4-7 in Orlando, Fla., at the Sonographer Reception and at the Canon Medical booth.
