The QuikClot Interventional dressing made by Z-Medica uses a mineral impregnated bandage to achieve hemostasis from femoral access site bleeding within three minutes. The pad comes with a Tegaderm transparent dressing to hold it in place.
The U.S. military uses QuikClot bandages with troops serving in combat zones overseas. The company says the product is preferred by many doctors because of its familiar gauze format, ability to be shaped and packed to any wound, and it is easy to remove once hemostasis has been achieved.
Originally developed in 2002, the technology was expanded for several specialty uses, including interventional cardiac procedures, in 2008.
