Mount Sinai Queens Cardiology Chief, George D. Dangas, MD, MSCAI, Named New SCAI President

George Dangas, MD, PhD, MSCAI, Professor of Medicine (Cardiology), and Surgery, at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai will serve as SCAI President for the 2023-2024 term. He is also Director of Cardiovascular Innovation at the Zena and Michael A. Wiener Cardiovascular Institute at Icahn Mount Sinai and Chief of Cardiology at Mount Sinai Queens, and the first Mount Sinai cardiologist to hold this position.

May 23, 2023 — The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions (SCAI) welcomed its 46th President and 2023-2024 Executive Committee officers during closing ceremonies at the SCAI 2023 Scientific Sessions, held May 18-20 in Phoenix, AZ.

George Dangas, MD, PhD, MSCAI, Professor of Medicine (Cardiology), and Surgery (Vascular), at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (NY) will serve as SCAI President. Dangas is also the Director of Cardiovascular Innovation at the Zena and Michael A. Wiener Cardiovascular Institute at Icahn Mount Sinai and Chief of Cardiology at Mount Sinai Queens, and is the first Mount Sinai cardiologist to hold this position.

Dangas is an authoritative voice in the performance of nonsurgical cardiovascular and valve interventions using both established and novel techniques, and on preventing and dissolving endovascular thrombosis. In his work with SCAI, he has served as a key faculty and program committee member for various meetings and events and is a former SCAI Trustee. An SCAI announcement on his appointment also noted that in this new role, Dangas will fulfill a number of important responsibilities including acting as the spokesperson for SCAI, supporting its development efforts, and helping manage its operations.

“I am deeply honored to serve as SCAI president this year” said Dr. Dangas. He added, “Our society is moving the interventional cardiology specialty forward in such impactful ways that are reflective of our current times and speak to the innovation required to advance patient care. I am excited to collaborate with our physician and associate members to address the needs of our profession and make an imprint on global health.”

Dangas completed medical and postgraduate studies at the National and Capodistrian University of Athens [Greece], and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Miriam Hospital and Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Dangas completed his cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology fellowships at The Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City. In addition, he has been certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology, and also elected Master of the American College of Cardiology.

President-Elect: James B. Hermiller, Jr., MD, MSCAI, an interventional cardiologist, researcher, and teacher, Hermiller serves as director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship and the Structural Heart Program at St. Vincent Ascension Heart Center in Indianapolis, IN, and is an assistant clinical professor of medicine at Duke University.

Vice President: Srihari S. Naidu, MD, FSCAI, Director of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and the Cardiac Cath Labs at Westchester Medical Center;

Treasurer: Arnold H. Seto, MD, FSCAI, Chief of Cardiology at the Long Beach VA Medical Center, and Associate Clinical Professor and Director of Interventional Research at the University of California, Irvine;

Newly-appointed Secretary: J. Dawn Abbott, MD, FSCAI, Professor of Medicine, Associate Chief of Faculty Development and Academic Advancement in the Division of Cardiology, Director, Interventional Cardiology at the Lifespan Cardiovascular Institute, and Director of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories, Rhode Island and The Miriam Hospital; and, 

SCAI Immediate Past President: SuniI V. Rao, MD, MSCAI, who is the Director of Interventional Cardiology at NYU Langone Health and the Director of the NYU Langone’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory in Manhattan, and is also the Professor of Medicine at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
