Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiology (IR) uses angiographic X-ray-guided, catheter based interventional procedures rather than open surgical procedures. The growth in IR has been rapid over the past decade as medicine moves toward less invasive procedures. These include, therapies for for interventional cancer treatments, including embolizationperipheral artery disease (PAD) revascularization, endovascular repair,  and interventional pulmonary embolism therapies.

The FDA’s market clearance occurred once the agency reviewed EnsiteVascular’s Section 510(k) premarket notification of intent to market the SiteSeal SV device and determined it is substantially equivalent for the indication for use stated: brachial artery closure. Previously, EnsiteVascular received FDA market clearance for SiteSeal SV for radial artery closure.

Boston Scientific's TheraSphere Y-90 Glass Microspheres enable selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT), or radioembolization, for hepatocellular carcinoma. This treats liver cancer with low toxicity using millions of microscopic glass beads containing radioactive yttrium (Y-90), delivered directly to liver tumors via catheter. The result in minimal radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.
