Navigating Advanced Visualization at RSNA 2007

By Nadim Daher, Industry Analyst - Medical Imaging, Frost & Sullivan

December 6, 2007 - At this year’s RSNA more PACS vendors were showing off the expanded 3D capabilities of their PACS offering and highlighting some of their partnerships with third-party vendors, particularly the more productive ones that have led to deeper levels of integration.

Advanced visualization was represented by the well-established vendors such as Vital Images, TeraRecon and Barco-Voxar, the smaller players such as Viatronix and Cedara, European companies such as 3Mensio and Rendoscopy, as well as new entrants in the North American market (such as Japan’s market leader Ziosoft) and a number of newer vendors such as Visage Imaging (a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercury Computer Systems), Calgary Scientific, Fovia Inc. and Aycan. By using server-client technology and collaborating with and selling OEM technology to PACS vendors, these vendors have taken on the mission of definitively bringing advanced visualization into the radiology workflow and associating it with a truly profitable business model.
In the meantime, with 3D reconstructions so time-consuming, radiologist's time so precious and the cost of dedicated 3D ‘supertechs’ so high, new companies such as 3DR Labs and 3D Diagnostix are offering remote 3D post-processing services.
