Sony Shows Medical Monitor Utilizing New OLED Technology

December 2, 2011At the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting, Sony Electronics unveiled its new works-in-progress 25-inch Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) medical grade monitor. With the introduction of the PVM-2551MD display (pending 510(k) clearance), Sony is the first display manufacturer to show the noted advantages of OLED technology to the radiology industry.

The PVM-2551MD display employs a Sony developed full high-definition (1920 x 1080) OLED panel that produces a superb high-contrast image and delivers an extremely wide color gamut, particularly when compared to even the highest-quality LCD displays.  Using Sony’s TRIMASTER EL technology, the OLED monitor is capable of reproducing pure black, faithful to the source signal.  This enables medical professionals to observe very subtle details such as the faint color differences between various tissue definition and hemodynamics.

The reproduction of deep black colors and high contrast images can be highly desirable when viewing radiology content.   Since OLED panels are self-emitting devices, light emission is completely shut off when displaying black colors. This allows the reproduction of images with high-contrast and unprecedented levels of deep black. With its much quicker response time than LCD, one of the greatest advantages of the OLED monitor is its ability to display quick motion of ultrasound images with virtually no motion blur.

Key advantages of the PVM-2551MD OLED monitor include the following:

-        Excellent color reproduction and full color contrast

-        True black reproduction with “Super Top Emission” structure

-        10-Bit signal processing

-        Variety of scan and display modes

-        Slim and light-weight design

-        Wide variety of input/outputs

-        Reduced power consumption requirements for environmentally friendly operation

-        Flexibility to store up to 20 user settings
