June 15, 2010 – Health care professionals can now get information on the diagnosis, pathology, and treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) on their smart phones. Actelion Pharmaceuticals US Inc. recently released the PAH Mobile Reference Guide, a complimentary application, which is available on the iPhone, iPad, and Blackberry.
PAH is a complex disease with diagnosis often delayed for more than two years from onset of symptoms . Richard Krasuski, M.D., staff cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic, said, “Having this mobile resource of PAH pathology and diagnosis including echocardiogram videos is an important reference tool to help doctors suspect and identify PAH earlier. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a chronic, life-threatening disorder characterized by abnormally high blood pressure in the arteries between the heart and lungs of an affected individual. The function of the heart and lungs is severely compromised, leading to a limited exercise capacity, and, ultimately, a reduced life expectancy. Approximately 100,000 people in Europe and the United States are afflicted with either idiopathic PAH or PAH associated with other conditions such as scleroderma or congenital heart disease. Approved therapies have shown positive treatment effects in patients with PAH [2,3].
