ASNC Announces Keynote Speakers for 2018 Annual Scientific Session

August 8, 2018 — The American Society of Nuclear Cardiology’s (ASNC) Annual Scientific Session, ASNC2018, will kick off with a full day of educational sessions on Sept. 6, and run through Sept. 9 in San Francisco. As the only professional organization dedicated to the dynamic specialty of nuclear cardiology, ASNC2018 will address emerging research, new technology, and advances in treatment in the field of nuclear cardiology and cardiac imaging. As 2018 marks ASNC’s 25th anniversary, the event will also feature special milestone celebrations and the dynamic past, present and future of nuclear cardiology.

This year's annual meeting begins on Sept. 6 with Tait Shanafelt, M.D., chief wellness officer and director of the Stanford WellMD Center, presenting “Finding Meaning, Balance and Professional Fulfillment in the Practice of Medicine.” Shanafelt is an international thought-leader and researcher on physician well-being and its implications for quality care. His research on physician burnout has been featured in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Annals of Internal Medicine and JAMA, and has been covered by many media outlets, including CNN, USA Today and The New York Times.

Also on Sept. 6, the ASNC2018 Mario Verani Lecture, ”Imaging in the Assessment of Preventive Cardiology”, will be presented by Kim Allan Williams, M.D., MACC, MASNC, FAHA, FESC, who has presided over three of the country's cardiovascular societies and is the cardiology division chief at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Williams served as president of ASNC in 2004-05, chair of the Association of Black Cardiologists Board of Directors in 2008-09 and president of the American College of Cardiology in 2015-16. Patients in Detroit and now Chicago have benefited from his innovative approaches. As chair of the cardiology division at Wayne State University School of Medicine, he launched the Urban Cardiology Initiative. Williams adapted the concept at Rush, with the HEART (Helping Everyone Assess Risk Today) program, which provides screening for cardiovascular disease at churches and community groups.

New ASNC2018 sessions include:

  • Image-Guided Patient Management Track led by master clinicians, and brand-new hands-on positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) workshops;
  • Elevating Patients’ Voices will highlight the perspectives of patients from the Amyloidosis Foundation, Stop Sarcoidosis, and WomenHeart; and
  • Machine Learning, Medicine and Imaging: The Future is Now featuring representatives from IBM Watson Health Imaging, Google, Siemens Medical Solutions, and Arterys that will offer deep-dives on machine learning, molecular imaging and more fast-evolving innovations.

ASNC2018 supports a multimodality agenda, featuring collaborative and interactive educational programs and presentations on the latest scientific and clinical research findings across the many imaging disciplines in order to promote a cost-effective, patient-centered approach to medical care. Cardiologists, physicians, scientists, radiologists, technologists, imaging specialists and other professionals from around the world with an interest in the field attend this educational event each year.
