Magnets Guide Catheters for Cardiac Treatment

July 9, 2007 - Stereotaxis magnetic navigation systems are being used to guide catheters into the heart for repairs.
A magnetically charged catheter inserted into a patient in their leg uses remarkably powerful magnets to push and pull the catheter into the heart to make repairs. These new magnetic probes are used at Ohio State University Medical Center, one of only 50 hospitals in the world to perform this procedure.
Emile Daoud, M.D., at Ohio State University Medical Center, uses an incredibly precise joystick to steer the probe as little as one millimeter in any direction using a stereotaxis magnetic navigation system.
