Reuters reports that seniors with diabetes are twice as likely to die from cardiovascular disease than non-diabetics, according to researchers from Kaiser Permanente in Tucker, GA.
In a study comprising about 6,000 people older than 65 over an 11-year period, more than 40 percent of the people died, and about 50 to 60 percent of the deaths were attributed to heart-related problems. Dr. Joshua Barzilay and colleagues published their report in the online journal “Public Library of Science.”
The risk of death from cardiovascular disease was particularly high for patients who required insulin injections. Results were adjusted for heart disease risk factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption and cholesterol levels.
