February 15, 2022 — American Heart Association CEO Nancy Brown issued the following statement in response to the Senate confirmation of Robert M. Califf, M.D., as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA):

February 15, 2022 – More than $625,000 in research grants devoted to congenital heart defects (CHD) were awarded today by the American Heart Association, the leading voluntary health organization devoted to a world of longer, healthier lives, and The Children’s Heart Foundation, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to funding CHD research.

January 15, 2022 – Babies who are born with only one functioning heart ventricle must undergo a series of three surgeries to correct the problem. The final surgery establishes Fontan circulation, which reroutes the circulatory system. However, more than half of patients who undergo the procedure don’t live into adulthood. To reduce the negative health effects associated with the Fontan procedure, UCF researchers are developing a self-powered injection jet shunt that uses the heart’s own energy to alleviate the heightened internal pressure caused by the rerouted circulatory system.
