Study: Digital Heart Health Program Use Linked to Lower Blood Pressure During, After Menopause

New study shows Hello Heart usage associated with lower blood pressure in women during and after menopause.

Study: Digital Heart Health Program Use Linked to Lower Blood Pressure During and After Menopause

Aug. 4, 2025 — A new peer-reviewed study in the American Journal of Preventive Cardiology shows Hello Heart’s digital heart health program is associated with significant blood pressure reductions among women with hypertension, including those in perimenopause and postmenopause — life stages where cardiovascular risk sharply increases but is often under-addressed in routine care.

The study, Blood Pressure Reduction by Gender and Menopause Status Among Hypertensive Participants of a Mobile Health Cardiovascular Risk Self-Management Program,” analyzed data from more than 48,000 participants (55% women) enrolled in the Hello Heart program between July 2015 and September 2023 — making it one of the largest studies of a digital health intervention’s impact on women’s health.

Key Findings

  • While the program proved effective for both women and men, women using Hello Heart experienced even greater blood pressure reductions, even after adjusting for age, medication use, and other factors.
  • Women in menopause, despite starting with higher baseline blood pressure, achieved improvements on par with their premenopausal peers.
  • Participants with very high blood pressure (≥140 mmHg) saw sustained reductions over 12 months, with women in this high-risk group lowering their numbers more than matched male participants.

“This study is a crucial step forward in understanding how to support women at a time when they face heightened cardiovascular risk,” said lead author Jayne Morgan, MD, a cardiologist and VP of Medical Affairs at Hello Heart. “We’ve known for years that menopause is a turning point for heart health, but until now, there’s been little data on scalable, effective ways to intervene during this phase. These findings show that digital tools can help close the gap.”

The Hello Heart program includes a connected blood pressure monitor, medication adherence tools, and AI-driven, personalized coaching, including educational heart health content tailored specifically for menopausal women. The study highlights how these targeted features may empower women to better manage their cardiovascular health and sustain behavior change over time.

“Menopause is a time of change, but it shouldn’t be the beginning of cardiovascular decline,” said co-author Erin Michos, MD, MHS, Professor of Medicine and Director of Women’s Cardiovascular Health at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “Accessible digital health programs like Hello Heart’s can empower women with actionable tools to reduce risk of a serious event.”

“We need to think of menopause as a window of opportunity when it comes to heart health and get proactive about helping women understand their risk and take action,” added co-author Martha Gulati, MD, MS, Director of Cardiovascular Prevention, and Associate Director of the Barbra Streisand Women’s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai. “This is a strong example of how we can do that.”
