MedicalCV’s Ablation Device Used in Closed-Chest Robotic Cardiac Procedure

April 6, 2007 — MedicalCV Inc., Minneapolis, MN, has announced that Allen R. Raczkowski, M.D., director of Robotic Cardiac Surgery at Banner Baywood Health Systems in Mesa, AZ, performed a closed-chest, robotic, lone cardiac ablation procedure on an arrested heart on March 30 using the ATRILAZE Surgical Ablation System.

"With a clinical history of unsuccessful medical treatment and interventional ablations, this patient was an ideal candidate for a minimally invasive operation. The versatility of the ATRILAZE wand allowed me to create the critical lesion sets with robotic assistance, providing the greatest chance of helping this patient," said Dr. Raczkowski, a leading pioneer in minimally invasive cardiac surgery. "I look forward to utilizing this and additional surgical ablation products from MedicalCV in the future."

The ATRILAZE Surgical Ablation System is a laser-based technology platform that provides cardiac tissue ablation in both open and endoscopic surgeries. The system is FDA cleared for ablation or coagulation of soft tissue, including cardiac tissue, but in the U.S. its use in treating cardiac arrhythmias is specifically excluded. To date, the product has been used in numerous institutions around the country including Baylor University Medical Center, Northwestern University Medical Center, Central DuPage Hospital, Baptist Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, and Scottsdale Healthcare - Osborn in Arizona.
