SCCT Awards Best Abstracts of 18th Annual Scientific Meeting

The Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) presented three winners of the Best Abstract Awards

August 7, 2023 — The Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) presented three winners of the Best Abstract Awards — supported by the Cardiovascular Research Foundation of Southern California (CVRF of So. Ca.) - Ma Family — at their 18th Annual Scientific Meeting (SCCT2023), held July 27 - 30 in Boston, Mass.

Teemu Maaniitty, MD, PhD, of Turku University Hospital in Finland is first author of the winning abstract, “Prognostic Value Of A Novel Artificial Intelligence-based CCTA-derived Ischemia Algorithm In Patients With Suspected Coronary Artery Disease: Comparison Against Hybrid CCTA/PET Perfusion Imaging.”

First runner-up is Borek Foldyna, MD, for his abstract, “Prognostic Significance Of Automated Epicardial Adipose Tissue Quantification From Lung Cancer Screening CT.”

Second runner up is Ben Duggan, MS, for his abstract, “Minimum Quantifiable Plaque Volume That Is Visually Detectable As Atherosclerosis Using Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography.”

“With the highest number of abstract submissions at our Annual Scientific Meeting combined with the high-quality research we reviewed as a judging panel, the SCCT Best Abstract Awards truly recognize the best and most promising abstracts in the field,” said chair of the Best Abstract judging panel, Milind Desai, MD, FSCCT. “We offer our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Maaniitty, the runners-up and finalists on their exceptional work.”

SCCT accepted over 260 abstracts as part of the conference. This award is open to all abstracts submitted to the annual scientific meeting. Finalists and winners are determined by receiving overall top scores through a three round scoring process.

Authors of the top-scoring abstracts presented on July 12 in a recorded session. A panel of judges led by Desai reviewed the top-scoring abstract presentations and selected winners.

Finalists include:

  • Anthony Reeves, PhD – AI-enabled Automated Cardiac Chambers Volumetry (AutoChamber) In Coronary Calcium Scans Outperforms CHARGE-AF For Prediction Of Atrial Fibrillation: The Multi-Ethnic Study Of Atherosclerosis
  • Misato Sone, MD – Ultra-high-resolution Computed Tomography Reconstructed Using Deep Learning Reconstruction For The Assessment Of Coronary Arteries
  • Carlos González, MD – The Impact Of Nitroglycerine Premedication On Dynamic Stress CT Perfusion Values And Their Correlation With Cardiac MR Imaging

The Best Abstract Award is supported by the Cardiovascular Research Foundation of Southern California and the Ma Family, who provided a $5,000 award for a first-place winner.

The award was accepted on behalf of Maaniitty by Sarah Bäer, co-author on the winning abstract. Along with a cash prize, the three winners also received one-year free membership to SCCT as well as free registration for SCCT2024, to be held July 18 - 24, 2024 in Washington, D.C.
