June 1, 2012 — Through the rapid growth of multi-slice computer tomography (CT) imaging, radiation protection has become a major issue in the radiological community. In response to this problem, ContextVision has collaborated with Dr. Lars Borgen, Drammen and Buskerud University College, Drammen, Norway, to explore technology solutions that will deliver superior image enhancement in cases of reduced patient image doses. Today Borgen will present his thesis, “Application of Adaptive Non-Linear 2-D and 3-D Post-Processing Filters for Reduced Dose Abdominal CT.”

June 1, 2012 — Kona Medical Inc. announced it has raised $30 million in Series C financing to advance its novel hypertension therapy. Existing investors Essex Woodlands, Domain Associates, Morgenthaler Ventures and BioStar Ventures participated, and the financing was led by a large-cap medical technology company. The terms of the financing provide for the potential inclusion of additional investors.

June 1, 2012 — Miracor Medical Systems GmbH announced that it has been granted three new U.S. patents covering a unique dual balloon method and the new “Wien Algorithm” of its novel PICSO (Pressure-Controlled Intermittent Coronary Sinus Occlusion) system that ensures a stable and repeatable PICSO treatment designed to improve myocardial perfusion following primary PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention, or angioplasty).

June 1, 2012 — LoneStar Heart Inc. announced the advancement of a new therapeutic strategy aimed at genetic reprogramming of cardiac fibroblasts into functioning heart muscle cells to treat damage following a heart attack and other forms of heart disease. The announcement follows a study conducted by researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UT Southwestern), published in the online May 13 issue of the journal Nature, demonstrating feasibility of the approach. The company has acquired exclusive worldwide rights to the new technology.

June 1, 2012 — When opening a new hospital or medical center, partnering with the right diagnostic imaging vendor with patient-focused technology and a trusted, responsive service and support team is critical to meet the tight deadlines of bringing a new facility online. As part of its new Gates Vascular Institute in Buffalo, N.Y., Kaleida Health selected Toshiba America Medical Systems Inc. to install 14 Infinix-i vascular X-ray systems, which will be used for all cardiovascular, neuro, vascular and electrophysiology (EP) procedures. Toshiba and Kaleida Health worked closely together to install all 14 systems within three months, ensuring the vascular labs were ready when the new facility’s doors opened.
