The data comes from the EMPHASIS-HF trial, which compared Pfizer’s drug to placebo and standard therapy in patients with mild symptoms.

November 17, 2010 – Data from the ADVANCE bridge-to-heart-transplant study showed that 92 percent of patients were either alive on the implanted device, had a heart transplant or explanted for recovery. The study looked at the HeartWare Ventricular Assist System at 180 days.

November 17, 2010 – Atrial fibrillation (AFib) patients treated with catheter ablation reported fewer symptoms and improved quality of life, according to data from Circulation Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes. The patients, who were treated with Biosense Webster’s NaviStar ThermoCool catheter, were compared with patients treated with antiarrhythmia drugs.

November 17, 2010 – A drug-eluting balloon (DEB) and a coronary stent have received CE mark approval in Europe. The DEB and the coronary CoCr stent, both by Blue Medical, have been approved for treating coronary diseases.

November 16, 2010 – Study results show that pacemaker patients without history of atrial tachycardia (AT) or atrial fibrillation (AF) who have device-detected arrhythmias are more likely to have a stroke than patients who don’t have device-detected arrhythmias. The ASSERT Trial, sponsored by St. Jude, found that those patients are approximately 2.5 times more likely to have a stroke.

November 16, 2010 – Analysis of data from the PARTNER trial showed that patients implanted with transcatheter heart valve not only experienced improved survival, but also substantially better quality of life. The results, which were presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2010, focused on the Sapien transcatheter heart valve, by Edwards.
