September 2, 2008 - Data from the landmark SYNTAX trial indicates patients with very complex coronary artery disease can safely choose to be treated with angioplasty and drug-eluting stents rather than open-heart surgery, said the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI).

The one-year results of SYNTAX also show that most patients with left main and multi-vessel disease who undergo angioplasty and stenting will not need a second revascularization procedure in the first year.

September 2, 2008 - Terumo Cardiovascular Systems said today it filed a patent infringement complaint Aug. 21 in the Northern District of California against Maquet Cardiovascular LLC, alleging Maquet’s Vasoview Endoscopic Vessel Harvesting System infringes a Terumo patent.

Terumo said the complaint requests an injunction against further sales of the Maquet product in the U.S.

Terumo sells the VirtuoSaph Endoscopic Vessel Harvesting System in the U.S., Japan, Asia and Europe.

September 2, 2008 – Philips showcased the CX50 CompactXtreme, a recently developed hand-carried ultrasound system designed to deliver high-quality images at the bedside, at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress 2008.

The product was developed in response to clinicians’ request for a user-friendly, compact system for urgent, on the spot investigations, according to Joris van den Hurk, vice president of cardiology programs for Philips Healthcare. The CX50 reportedly provides a simple way to secure diagnostic quality images at the bedside to save time.

Procedicus VIST (Vascular Intervention Simulation Trainer) is a simulator for catheter-based procedures designed to allow relevant and realistic, hands-on training for angiography and interventional procedures at different levels.

Ovalum will feature its CiTop ExPander Guidewire at TCT 2008. According to the company, the guidewire was recently used in a successful study on traversing chronic total occlusions in the coronary arteries.

The CiTop ExPander guidewire is designed to provide a simpler and more efficient means to open the chronic total occlusion, thus avoiding the need for coronary bypass surgery.

At this time, the device has not been approved by U.S. or European regulatory bodies.
