A study including more than 20,000 adults in China found combined use of the hypertension medication enalapril and folic acid significantly reduced the risk of first stroke. All of the patients included in the trial had high blood pressure but no history of stroke or heart attack. The study appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in coordination with its presentation at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Annual Scientific Session.

Nearly half of interventional cardiologists responding to a survey conducted by the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) reported at least one work-related orthopedic complication. The findings, published in Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions, indicate that occupational health issues are on the rise among interventional cardiologists.

Medtronic plc announced the first patient enrollment in the GOLD AF Registry, a prospective, observational clinical study of its Phased Radiofrequency (RF) Ablation technology for treating patients with symptomatic atrial fibrillation (AF). The multicenter registry will provide real-world insights into the procedural use and treatment outcomes of the Pulmonary Vein Ablation Catheter (PVAC) GOLD, multi-electrode ablation catheter and other catheters that comprise Medtronic's Phased RF technology.

Maquet Cardiovascular USA announced publication of a manuscript comparing the clinical and economic impact of percutaneous ventricular assist devices (pVAD) with intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP) for high-risk patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The paper, titled "Clinical and Economic Effectiveness of Percutaneous Ventricular Assist Devices for High-Risk Patients Undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention," appears in the March 2015 volume of the Journal of Invasive Cardiology.

A new non-profit association, the Organization for Occupational Radiation Safety in Interventional Fluoroscopy (ORSIF), was recently launched to generate awareness of the potential serious health risks linked to the use of and exposure to fluoroscopy. The association is headquartered in Washington, D.C.

Calgary Scientific Inc. announced a partnership and distribution agreement with Apollo PACS. Calgary Scientific’s ResolutionMD enterprise image-viewer will be integrated with the Apollo Enterprise Patient Multimedia Manager (Apollo EPMM) to extend Web and mobile image access. The integration will help physicians make more informed decisions by enabling quick and secure access to medical images using desktop, Web or mobile devices.
