Highlights From SNMMI 2014

The key cardiology news coming out of the 2014 meeting for the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) in St. Louis, Mo., were two late-breaker cardiovascular imaging studies, and that all the key vendors introduced new PET/CT systems for the market. 

 

Among the most innovative system was Philips’ Vereos, which is the first on the market to offer digital PET detectors, which are supposed to offer greater image clarity over traditional analog photo-multipliers. Siemens also introduced a new software system for molecular imaging that allows accurate standard uptake value (SUV) comparisons between different vendor’s imaging systems, allowing images from other facilities and other vendor’s imaging systems to be viewed on one workstation. With the advent and optimization of nuclear scintigraphy protocols using bone-avid radiotracers, cardiac amyloidosis caused by transthyretin protein (ATTR) can now be diagnosed noninvasively without a costly tissue biopsy. The radiotracer 99mTc-pyrophosphate (99mTc-PYP) binds to deposited ATTR amyloid fibrils in the myocardium and can be visualized using planar and SPECT imaging. The image shows how SPECT allows the reader to distinguish between blood pool activity and radiotracer uptake.

With the advent and optimization of nuclear scintigraphy protocols using bone-avid radiotracers, cardiac amyloidosis caused by transthyretin protein (ATTR) can now be diagnosed noninvasively without a costly tissue biopsy. The radiotracer 99mTc-pyrophosphate (99mTc-PYP) binds to deposited ATTR amyloid fibrils in the myocardium and can be visualized using planar and SPECT imaging. This is Figure 2, showing how SPECT imaging allows the reader to distinguish between blood pool activity (ventricular cavity, etc) and myocardial activity and identify regional myocardial differences in radiotracer uptake.
