New Balloon Catheter for Carotid, Renal Angioplasty Hits the Market

June 13, 2007 - Cordis Endovascular announced at the 61st Annual Meeting of the Society for Vascular Surgery the worldwide launch of the Cordis AVIATOR Plus Balloon Dilatation Catheter for use in angioplasty procedures for patients with carotid and or renal artery blockages.
The device combines high-pressure expansion and low profile .014 inch rapid exchange (RX) or single operator system designed to facilitate procedural speed and efficiency by enabling fast inflation and deflation times. Cordis' DURALYN Balloon Material reportedly allows for precise and consistent inflation diameters in the AVIATOR Plus. Fast inflation and deflation time during carotid or renal intervention procedures helps to limit the period of distal ischemia, and the low profile may help reduce the risk of plaque disruption and embolization when crossing the lesion.

“The enhanced pushability and lower profile enabled rapid and efficient treatment of the lesion," said Horst Sievert, PhD, Cardiovascular Center Frankfurt, Sankt Katharinen, who performed the first carotid live case with AVIATOR™ Plus at the recent EuroPCR 2007 Congress held in Barcelona, Spain.
