May 17, 2017 — A new intravenous occlusion balloon designed to seal any accidental tears in the superior vena cava (SVC) during lead extraction procedures was shown it can provide a bridge to surgical repair and help reduce the usual 50 percent mortality associated with the complication.

May 17, 2017 — Partners HealthCare and GE Healthcare announced a 10-year collaboration to rapidly develop, validate and strategically integrate deep learning technology across the entire continuum of care. The collaboration will be executed through the newly formed Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital Center for Clinical Data Science and will feature co-located, multidisciplinary teams with broad access to data, computational infrastructure and clinical expertise.

Contego Medical LLC announced recently that it has received CE Marking of its Vanguard IEP Peripheral Balloon Angioplasty System with Integrated Embolic Protection (IEP). The company intends to launch the Vanguard IEP System in Europe to endovascular specialists performing lower limb angioplasty procedures.

An analysis of non ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) patients who undergo coronary revascularization within 24 hours of hospitalization showed an increased reduction in mortality, marking the first time this difference has been demonstrated. Results from “Outcomes of Early vs. Late Revascularization in Low and High-Risk Patients Hospitalized with Non-ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Surveillance Study” were presented as a late-breaking clinical trial at the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) 2017 Scientific Sessions, May 10-13 in New Orleans.

May 16, 2017 - The preliminary results for the Medtronic Micra Transcatheter Pacing System (TPS) Post-Approval Registry showed a 99.6 percent implant success rate and a low rate of major complications (1.51 percent) at 30 days in a diverse, real-world patient population. The study was presented in a late-breaking clinical trial session at Heart Rhythm 2017, the Heart Rhythm Society's 38th Annual Scientific Sessions, and simultaneously published in Heart Rhythm.

May 16, 2017 - The study using small, subcutaneous implantable cardiac monitors for long-term, 24-hour a day monitoring, detected a high incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients previously undiagnosed but suspected to be at high-risk for AF and stroke. Data from the REVEAL AF (Incidence of AF in High Risk Patients) study were presented as a late-breaking session at Heart Rhythm 2017, the Heart Rhythm Society's 38th Annual Scientific Sessions.

May 16, 2017 – A new study examines the effectiveness of the implantable subcutaneous string defibrillator (ISSD), a flexible, string-shaped and first-ever rechargeable implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). This is the first-in-man study to report on the feasibility of the innovative device and was presented today at Heart Rhythm 2017, the Heart Rhythm Society’s 38th Annual Scientific Sessions.

Vascular Interventional Advances (VIVA)

The largest real-world study of robotic percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) demonstrated clinical and technical success for patients across multiple sites using multiple operators. Results from the PRECISION trial (Efficacy and Safety Outcomes of Radial- vs Femoral-Access Robotic Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: Final Results of the Multicenter PRECISION Registry) were presented as a late-breaking clinical trial at the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) 2017 Scientific Sessions, May 10-13 in New Orleans.
