CT Angiography (CTA)

This channel includes news and new technology innovations for CT systems use a series of X-ray images to create an image volume datasetthatcan slices or manipulated on any plane using advanced visualization software. The section includes computed tomography scanners, CT contrast agents, CT angiography (CTA and CCTA), CT perfusion, spectral CT (dual souce CT), and interative reconstruction dose reduction software. Find more news on cardic CT in the Society of Cariovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) channel page.

GE Healthcare partnered with the AI developer Dia to provide an artificial intelligence algorithm to auto contour and calculate cardiac ejection fraction (EF). The app is now available on the GE Vscan pocket, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) system, as seen here displayed at RSNA 2019. Watch a VIDEO demo from RSNA.

The researchers used high resolution cross-sectional imaging with CT or MRI to assess 225 men with abdominal aortic aneurysm. Follow-up lasted, on average, more than three years. Slightly more than half of patients had an intraluminal thrombus. The aneurysms of those with intraluminal thrombus were larger at baseline and grew by a rate of 2 mm per year, twice as fast as the 1 mm per year growth rate in people without intraluminal thrombus.

This is an example of artificial intelligence automation for cardiac MRI using an AI app from TeraRecon's Envoy AI marketplace. The GE MRI image has bee countoured, anatomy labeled and all quantification automated by the AI, greatly reducing post-processing time. See this and other new AI imaging technologies from the 2019 RSNA meeting.

The most popular cardiac technology news in August 2019 was the FDA clearance for a new indication for both the Edwards Sapien 3 and Medtronic CoreValve transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) devices for low-risk patients. This puts the technology on equal footing with the previous standard-of-care of open heart surgery, representing a paradigm shift in cardiology.
