Medtronic announced new data from the landmark WRAP-IT study published in Heart Rhythm,[1] demonstrating a significantly lower infection risk for patients who develop hematomas after cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) when the Tyrx Absorbable Antibacterial Envelope is used at implant. The analysis showed an 82% reduction in major CIED infections among patients with the Tyrx Envelope who developed hematomas compared to patients in the control group who developed hematomas.

Medtronic is recalling some of its implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT-D) devices because of an unexpected and rapid decrease in battery life. The company said this is due to a short circuit and will cause some devices to produce a “Recommended Replacement Time” (first warning that the battery is low) earlier than expected. Some devices may progress from “Recommended Replacement Time” to full battery depletion within as little as one day.

The new ACC Electrophysiology (EP) Device Implant Registry, part of the National Cardiovascular Data Registry (NCDR) will include data on implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) and cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator (CRT-D) procedures previously captured in the NCDR ICD Registry, as well as provide the flexibility to capture novel pacemaker procedures. The registry is aligned with the ACC’s Electrophysiology Accreditation program, fully supporting the program’s data requirements.
