August 17, 2011 — The Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) announced the election of James K. Min, M.D., FSCCT, as its new president and John R. Lesser, M.D., FSCCT, as president-elect of the organization. Jeffrey J. Carr, M.D., FSCCT, is the vice president and Ricardo C. Cury, M.D. is joining the executive committee as treasurer. The announcement was made official at the sixth annual scientific meeting, recently held in Denver, Colo.

August 17, 2011 — OrbusNeich announced its Genous stent showed no significant difference in target vessel failure (TVF) rate at two years from the Taxus Liberte paclitaxel-eluting stent in patients with de novo coronary artery lesions at high risk for restenosis. The two-year follow-up data from the prospective, randomized TRIAS pilot study were published in Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions.

August 17, 2011 — Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center performed its first “hybrid” heart surgery and what is believed to be the first such procedure in southern New Jersey. Arthur T. Martella, M.D., chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Lourdes, and Anil G. Kothari, M.D., FACC, FSCA & I of Lourdes Health System affiliate South Jersey Heart Group, performed the procedure.

August 17, 2011 – Abbott announced today that the first patient in Japan has been treated with the Absorb bioresorbable vascular scaffold (BVS) as part of the ABSORB EXTEND clinical trial. Abbott's BVS restores blood flow by opening a clogged vessel and providing support to the vessel until the device dissolves within approximately two years, leaving patients with a treated vessel free of a permanent metallic implant. The device received CE Mark approval in the European Union (EU) for the treatment of coronary artery disease and is under clinical investigation in several countries around the world. The first patient in Japan was treated in the ABSORB EXTEND clinical trial by Shigeru Saito, M.D., director, Cardiology and Catheterization Laboratories, and vice president, Shonan Kamakura Hospital, Kanagawa, Japan.
