April 1, 2011 – Oral antiplatelet therapy Effient (prasugrel) has been added to the updated clinical practice guidelines as a Class I recommended treatment option for patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) after experiencing heart-related chest pain at rest (unstable angina) or non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI).

April 1, 2011 –Results from the RADAR Phase 2b clinical trial will be announced at the i2 Summit during the American College of Cardiology (ACC) 2011 Annual Scientific Session and Expo. The trial examined the Reg1 anticoagulation system, from Regado Biosciences.

Data will be presented by Thomas J. Povsic, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of medicine at Duke University.

April 1, 2011 – A new minimally invasive embolization catheter was unveiled at the Society of Interventional Radiology Annual Scientific Meeting. The Cantata Superselective Microcatheter, from Cook Medical, offers a combination of support and torqueability to help interventional radiologists navigate tortuous anatomies.

April 1, 2011 – Jan Medical announced that clinical data related to its portable brain imaging system were disclosed at the Society of Interventional Radiology Annual Meeting. The data demonstrated a breakthrough in detecting strokes.

The system is designed for the diagnosis of traumatic brain injury, including concussions.

March 31, 2011 – Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT is more than just a one-time complication from a long plane ride. The Society of Interventional Radiology wants individuals to know the risk factors for this very serious condition, which can lead to post-thrombotic syndrome, pulmonary embolism, permanent damage to the leg and even death.

March 30, 2011 – Interventional radiologists have completed the first human randomized controlled trial of therapeutic renal denervation, or RDN. RDN is a procedure that uses a catheter-based probe inserted into the renal artery that emits high-frequency energy to deactivate the nerves near the kidneys (or in the renal artery) that are linked to high blood pressure.

March 29, 2011 – One-year outcomes from Cohort A of the PARTNER trial will be presented April 3 at the American College of Cardiology’s (ACC) 60th Annual Scientific Session and Expo in New Orleans. Additionally, economic data from Cohort B will be featured in a session immediately after.
