June 8, 2008 - Inhalation of carbon monoxide (CO) can reduce skeletal muscle injury after the following limb peripheral vascular disease (ischemia) when damage is caused after the blood supply returns to the tissue, according to researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital who presented results from their study during the Vascular Annual Meeting, June 5- 8, San Diego, CA.

The results came from a review of 23 mice from two groups: 10 who were given CO and 13 who were not, to determine how CO affects their recovery from such injuries.

Acusphere has submitted a New Drug Application (NDA) to the FDA for approval to market Imagify (Perflubutane Polymer Microspheres for Injectable Suspension), an ultrasound imaging agent for the detection of coronary artery disease, which could prove as accurate as nuclear stress testing.

June 5, 2008 - The FDA has just approved Medtronic’s Talent Thoracic Stent Graft for endovascular treatment for descending aneurysms and penetrating ulcers of the thoracic aorta. The approval gives endovascular interventionalists in the United States access to an innovative medical device that will bring treatment to an additional 25 percent of patients.

June 5, 2008 – There was a 14 percent increase in MRI procedures from 2003 to 2007, for an average annual rate of 3 percent, representing a slowdown in procedure growth compared to the beginning of the decade, when the average annual growth rate from 1999 to 2003 was about 15 percent, according to IMV’s recent census of MRI sites in the U.S.

The census showed an estimated 27.5 million MRI procedures were performed at 7,195 sites in 2007, increasing from 24.2 million in 2003.
