August 19, 2020 — Caption Health a leader in medical AI technology, has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for an updated version of Caption Interpretation, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to enable clinicians to obtain quick, easy and accurate measurements of cardiac ejection fraction (EF) at the point of care.


The No. 1 overarching hot topic at all the medical conferences over the past couple years has been artificial intelligence (AI). What was once science fiction or far-fetched research projects are now starting to gain U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) market clearance. Some AI elements are already being used without clinicians knowing it, being integrated into the backend of cardiology imaging systems and IT reporting systems to help speed workflow. 


August 18, 2020 — Philips Healthcare introduced its new OmniWire, the world’s first solid core fractional flow reserve (FFR) pressure wire for coronary artery interventional procedures. With its solid core construction, physicians can more easily maneuver the wire in the patient’s circulatory system to measure blood pressure along the vessel and guide the delivery of catheters and stents. 

August 18, 2020 — Ziehm Imaging announces the acquisition of Therenva, a French-based developer of planning and imaging software tools for cardiovascular procedures. Building on a two-year market cooperation in Europe, Ziehm and Therenva have now taken the next step. Ziehm will leverage its strong distribution network of mobile C-arm angiography systems to market Therenva’s current product portfolio globally.

COVID-19 is creating a new generation of cardiac patients.  With heart disease already the leading cause of deaths globally, this epidemic within a pandemic — a crisis within a crisis — creates a cardiology conundrum.

In all my years involved in healthcare, this is the most massive medical mystery I’ve encountered. The way patients are triaged, diagnosed, treated and monitored will forever change because of COVID-19.  Perhaps nowhere has that been more evident than in the field of cardiology.

August 17, 2020 — A Northwestern Medicine Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute physician was the first electrophyiologist in Illinois to use a new advanced imaging system during cryo-ablation for atrial fibrillation. 

August 17, 2020 — Veryan Medical announced it will support Vasorum in the commercialization of the Celt atrial closure device (ACD) in the United States. The Celt ACD is a vascular closure device that has been used in more than 60,000 patients to date with excellent clinical results following percutaneous catheter-based vascular procedures.
