Medtronic Inc. announced U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance, CE marking and the global launch of its Reveal Linq Insertable Cardiac Monitor (ICM) System. Medtronic calls it the smallest implantable cardiac monitoring device available for patients. 
Medtronic Micra Transcatheter Pacing System TPS EP Lab Clinical Trial Study

Medtronic Inc. announced the first U.S. implant of the Micra Transcatheter Pacing System (TPS). The device was successfully implanted at NYU Langone Medical Center by Larry Chinitz, M.D., director of the Heart Rhythm Center at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. The implantation is part of the Medtronic global pivotal clinical trial. The Micra TPS is an investigational device worldwide.

Healthcare expenditure has been increasing throughout the last decade, and is beginning to become unmanageable. The American Heart Association has estimated that, in 2010, spending on cardiovascular disease (CVD) reached $273 billion dollars; a figure expected to rise with an increasing burden of disease. High healthcare expenditure is rooted in inefficient healthcare systems. Both physician’s and nurse’s time is taken up with administrative tasks and analysis of patient data through multiple appointments with patients over the course of their treatment, reducing the time they have available for valuable patient care.

Results of the 2013 HIMSS Security Survey show progress toward hardened security and use of analytics, but more work is needed to mitigate insider threat, such as inappropriate access of data by employees. Federal initiatives such as OCR audits, meaningful use (MU) and the HIPAA Omnibus Rule encourage healthcare organizations to increase the budgets and resources dedicated to securing patient health data. However, over the past year, 19 percent of respondents reported a security breach. Additionally, 12 percent of organizations have had at least one known case of medical identity theft reported by a patient.
