October 19, 2011— W. L. Gore and Associates announced that the company purchased the assets and intellectual property of now defunct company NMT Medical Inc. The purchase included the data related to CLOSURE I, a prospective, multi-center, randomized controlled trial of patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure with the Starflex Device versus best medical therapy for the prevention of recurrent stroke and /or transient ischemic attack (TIA) in patients with cryptogenic stroke/TIA and PFO.

October 19, 2011 - A new study published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions shows lesions with large lipid cores are associated with a 50 percent risk of heart attack in patients undergoing coronary stent implantation.

October 19, 2011 – A new study proves the importance of electrocardiographic (ECG) screenings to identify heart abnormalities in young adults, including both athletes and non-athletes.  The study, published in the October edition of HeartRhythm, the official journal of the Heart Rhythm Society, demonstrates the success of a high-volume ECG screening program designed to identify potential life-threatening heart arrhythmias in high school students.  Of the more than 32,000 students screened, ECG abnormalities that may be associated with the risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) were identified in more than 800 students.

October 19, 2011 – Boston Scientific has completed enrollment in a clinical trial to evaluate its WallFlex Biliary RX fully covered stent for the treatment of benign bile duct strictures (narrowing or blockages).  This multi-center, prospective study enrolled 187 patients at 13 centers in 11 countries worldwide.  Lead investigators in the study are Professor Jacques Deviere, M.D., Ph.D., of Hospital Erasme in Brussels, and Professor Guido Costamagna, M.D., of Policlinico A. Gemelli in Rome.

October 18, 2011 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a proposed rule and draft special controls guidance lowering the risk classification for external pacemaker pulse generators from Class III (high-risk) to Class II (moderate-risk).

October 18, 2011 — Abbott announced the investigational Absorb bioresorbable vascular scaffold (BVS) has been recognized as the winner of the Medical Devices category in the 2011 Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation Awards. Absorb is an implantable device that restores blood flow by opening a blocked artery and providing support to the vessel until the device dissolves.
