Hunterdon Medical Center, a tertiary care center in Flemington, N.J., was looking to update its current cardiovascular imaging software and processes to meet the expanding healthcare demands of the growing central New Jersey region. The medical center deployed McKesson Cardiology to create a single Cardiovascular Information System (CVIS). This new system provides physicians with anytime, anywhere access to studies that can be launched from within a single electronic medical record (EMR).

Challenges

December 29, 2016 — The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) finalized new Medicare alternative payment models Dec. 20, which includes new bundled payments for cardiac care. The measures are part of the administration’s healthcare reforms and include new approaches to shift Medicare payments from rewarding quantity to rewarding quality by creating incentives for hospitals and clinicians to work together to avoid complications, avoid preventable hospital readmissions and speed patient recovery.

December 29, 2016 — Cardiologists are highly satisfied in their careers; however, disparities remain between the career experiences of men and women, according to the American College of Cardiology's third Professional Life Survey recently published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC). The ACC has conducted the Professional Life Survey every 10 years since 1996 to capture how changes in cardiovascular medicine have impacted the experiences of cardiologists in both their personal and professional lives.

December 28, 2016 — Cimaglermin, a new experimental drug, may help restore cardiac function after heart failure, according to a first-in-man study published Dec. 26 in the Journal of the America College of Cardiology (JACC): Basic to Translational Science.

Heart failure, characterized by a loss of cardiac function, is among the leading causes of death worldwide. A significant portion of heart failure patients, particularly those with severe left ventricular systolic dysfunction, do not sufficiently respond to current medical therapy.
