Studies have shown that the risk of heart disease is higher in this group of women after radiation treatment because it can be difficult to ensure that a sufficient dose of radiation is delivered to the left breast while adequately shielding the heart from exposure. Bellerophon Therapeutics LLC announced that it has completed enrollment of its PRESERVATION I clinical trial of Bioabsorbable Cardiac Matrix (BCM), an investigational implantable medical device being studied for the prevention of congestive heart failure following an acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The procedure has been completed in 303 patients at almost 90 clinical sites in Australia, Europe, Israel and North America. Supplementing written heart screening guidelines with telephone counseling from specially trained nurses more than doubled the likelihood that adult survivors of childhood cancer received recommended heart checks, according to results from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS).
