A revolutionary advancement in PET/CT, the GEMINI TF is the first PET/CT system that features time-of-flight PET imaging. The GEMINI TF offers new levels of image quality, consistency and performance — regardless of patient size. By improving image quality with low count-rate imaging, the new PET/CT system opens a pathway to the next emerging set of applications for PET — molecular imaging.

A 64-slice combination PET/CT system for cardiac imaging, the Discovery VCT reportedly combines high-resolution capabilities of GE’s volumetric CT with metabolic and physiologic capabilities of its PET system, aiming to result in a more accurate diagnosis and identification of heart disease, cancer and neurological disorders.

With the system, physicians can assess areas of the heart that are not getting sufficient blood supply and look for stenosis in the coronary arteries, said GE.

Siemens has introduced a 40-slice configuration to its Biograph family of PET/CT systems. The Biograph family — which consists of two-, six-, 16-, 40- and 64-slice configurations — is reportedly a comprehensive PET/CT product.

A unified platform for visualization of cardiac images from hybrid imaging technologies, the syngo CardioFusion makes it quick and easy to view high-quality images of the heart, said the company.

With the growing trend in healthcare toward higher operational costs, reduced reimbursement and heightened competition among imaging service providers, healthcare facilities must carefully plan capital equipment acquisitions and budgets.

For most of us, handheld devices put the “fun” in functional. In the medical world, these tools do much more — they help save lives.

Sugar, the sweet touch of every taste, could make some lives quite sour. Recent studies have shown a direct correlation between blood sugar level and survival rate of critically ill patients.

Chest pain is a common complaint among ED patients, yet failure to diagnose acute myocardial infarction in the trauma unit occurs in as many as 20 percent of cases, according to some estimates.
Serious conditions that are occasionally misdiagnosed in the ED include: acute myocardial infarction, stroke, pulmonary embolism, meningitis and appendicitis. Standard protocol for chest pain is an echocardiogram (ECG); however, physicians may rely too heavily on this test, which does not rule out a heart attack if results are normal.

A device made by Life Support Inc reportedly allows remote electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring from any location in the U.S. with telephone access.

Offering a selection of packaging options and concentrations (160, 240, 300, 320 and 350), OptiMARK (gadoversetamide injection) is one of the first MRI contrast agent approved for use with power injection. Using OptiMARK with the OptiStar LE power injector at rates of 1 to 2 ml per second image quality, diagnostic accuracy, reproducibility, accurate timing of bolus and a tight bolus (when used with saline flush at the same flow rate as the contrast media), said Tyco. It is available in glass vials in a range of sizes or easy-to-use Ultraject prefilled syringes.

Trans fat testing and complete fatty acid profiles are available as additional blood testing options to the OMX-3, the Omega-3 Index test.
