July 30, 2018 — Silk Road Medical Inc. recently announced the presentation of real-world data for the treatment of patients with carotid artery disease at risk for stroke at the Society for Vascular Surgery 2018 Vascular Annual Meeting (VAM), June 20-23 in Boston.

July 30, 2018 — Approximately 75 percent of black and men women are likely to develop high blood pressure by the age of 55, according to new research in Journal of the American Heart Association. This compares to 55 percent of white men and 40 percent of white women in the same age range.

July 27, 2018 — Following the deactivation of the National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC) by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the ECRI Institute announced that it will continue providing a centralized source for evidence-based information on clinical practice guidelines.

A 360 degree view of a computed tomography (CT) transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) work up assessment using Canon Medical Systems’ software at the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) 2018 meeting. The run-off CT image is used to assess the femoral access route and to size the valve annulus for device sizing.

A 360 degree view of the first dedicated cardiac computed tomography (CT) system, the GE Healthcare CardioGraphe displayed on the show floor at the 2018 Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT). It offers a fast gantry rotation speed to freeze cardiac motion, large enough anatomical coverage to view the scan the entire heart in one rotation.

A 360 degree photo of the 3-D printed models created from cardiac computed tomography (CT) scans displayed in the Vital Images booth at the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) 2018 meeting. The vendor has a partnership with two 3-D printer companies where users can send STL files from the Vital software for remote, mail order printing projects.

Here is a round-up of the latest technology updates and trends in cardiac computed tomography (CT) from the Society of Cardiovascular CT (SCCT) 2018 meeting in July.

Trends and Advances in Cardiac CT Technology

The number of patients undergoing mitral valve operations are at an all-time high, and new research suggests many patients do not undergo surgical intervention until it is too late to completely reverse damage caused by mitral valve disease. The study is posted online in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery.

July 26, 2018 — The pivotal clinical study in the U.S. of the Abbott Tendyne Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement (TMVR) system has begun. The device is designed for the treatment of mitral regurgitation without the need for open-heart surgery. The trial data will be used for submission to the U.S. Food and Drug Adminsitration (FDA) to seek market clearance.

July 26, 2018 — The Society of Cardiac Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) released a focused update expert consensus statement in July for the use of invasive coronary physiological assessments. It recommends either fractional flow reserve (FFR) and instantaneous wave-free ratio (iFR) technologies can be used to assess the hemodynamic significance of coronary lesions to determine if a stent is needed.
