At the 96th American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) Annual Meeting, investigators presented the results of a long-term study of patients who underwent mitral valve (MV) repair.


May 16, 2016 — The largest observational study of percutaneous transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) demonstrated that moderate sedation use is associated with improved patient outcomes, including lower 30-day mortality and shorter hospital stays, as compared to traditional general anesthesia. This STS/ACC TVT Registry analysis was presented as a late-breaking clinical trial at the 2016 Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) annual meeting. 

May 16, 2016 — Cardinal Health announced it has entered into a distribution agreement with Biosensors that enables Cordis, Cardinal Health’s interventional vascular business, to sell Biosensors’ coronary stent portfolio. Cordis will sell Biosensors’ coronary stents in select countries in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

May 16,  2016 — Patients treated with processed autologous adipose-derived regenerative cells (ADRCs) injected into the heart muscle demonstrated symptomatic improvement and a trend towards lower rates of heart failure hospitalizations and angina, despite no improvement in left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF) or ventricular volumes. The ATHENA trial results were presented as a late-breaking clinical trial at the 2016 Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) annual meeting. 

May 16, 2016 – To work towards a better method of diagnosis and treatment of congestive heart failure (CHF), Peter Eckman, M.D., with the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF) is an investigator leading the SMILE (Sensible Medical Innovations Lung fLuid status monitor allows rEducing readmission rate of heart failure patients) study at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis. This study will involve the use of the SensiVest, a product developed by Sensible Medical Innovations, headquartered in Israel.

May 16, 2016 — A study using a stem cell therapy to treat challenging refractory angina (RA) patients demonstrated promising results, including improvement exercise time, reduced angina and reduced mortality. The RENEW results were presented as a late-breaking clinical trial at the 2016 Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) annual meeting.

May 16, 2016 – Women younger than 55 years of age who undergo percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) are more likely to experience one-year adverse cardiovascular events due to risk factors such as diabetes and chronic kidney disease, yet they are less likely to receive potent antiplatelet therapy than men.

May 16, 2016 — In a new study using optical coherence tomography (OCT), an invasive laser imaging technique that provides high-resolution images, researchers found that maximum lipid arc and the presence of lipid plaque contralateral to the side branch (SB) ostium before stenting may contribute to significant side branch ostium stenosis (SBOS) after stenting.

May 16, 2016 — A study on the impact of using different anticoagulation medications on men and women who have undergone a transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) found no difference in early vascular complications or mortality. The BRAVO 3 results were presented as a late‐breaking clinical trial at the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) 2016 annual meeting.
