August 10, 2020 - The Guerin Family Congenital Heart Program in the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai is expanding its surgical care for children and adult congenital heart disease patients by embarking on a new initiative that includes the expertise of the world-renowned Keck Medicine of USC heart surgery team.

August 7, 2020 — The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced research funding to encourage the development of approaches that identify children at high risk for developing Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C), thought to be a severe complication of COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2). Up to $20 million will be awarded to successful research proposals over four years.


Drug-coated balloons (DCB), also referred to as drug-eluting balloons (DEB), were created as a way to reduce very high restenosis rates in peripheral vessels. They also have been investigated in clinical trials to prevent coronary artery in-stent restenosis. 


August 6, 2020 – Conformal Medical Inc. announced it secured $85 million in Series C financing to support the company’s U.S. pivotal trial of its novel CLAAS device, a next-generation transcatheter left atrial appendage (LAA) closure occluder for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). LAA occlusion allows AFib patients to go off of life-long anticoagulation therapy.

August 5, 2020 – Minneapolis-based CardioMech AS, a medical device company developing a transfemoral, transseptally delivered mitral valve repair technology, announced it has closed on its Series A financing led by a non-disclosed strategic investor together with healthcare specialist investor Hadean Ventures and Investinor. The $18.5 million in financing will fund its first-in-human feasibility trial.   

August 5, 2020 – NorthShore University HealthSystem , Carnegie Mellon University and physIQ are collaborating on a multi-phase pilot project using the pinpointIQ solution to manage patients with heart failure and patients undergoing ileostomy. These patient populations historically have significant clinical risks when transitioning from the hospital to home.


August 5, 2020 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) this week for the use of Abiomed Impella left ventricular (LV) support systems to providing temporary LV unloading and support to treat critical  coronavirus (COVID‐19) patients who are already on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment.

August 4, 2020 — Abbott announced the first enrollments in the TactiFlex PAF  investigational device exemption (IDE) study to evaluate a new device to treat people suffering from paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). The study will evaluate the performance of the investigational TactiFlex Ablation Catheter, Sensor Enabled (SE) for people whose atrial fibrillation (AFib) symptoms are unable to be managed by medication.

August 4, 2020 - More than three years after a clinical trial was prematurely ended for failing to show progress in healing heart attack scars, the European Heart Journal publishing some surprising results showing that the heart cell treatment does benefit patients.[1]

Data from the ALLSTAR study published Tuesday by the European Heart Journal showed that although infusions of allogeneic cardiac cells (called cardiosphere-derived cells or CDCs) did not appear to shrink the infarct scar after a heart attack, other data from the study show a clear benefit.
