W. L. Gore & Associates Inc. (Gore) announced the first U.S. implant of the Gore Tag Conformable Thoracic Stent Graft with Active Control System. The successful procedure was performed by William Jordan, M.D., chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Bradley Leshnower, M.D., cardiothoracic surgeon, at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. This first case follows the recent U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for this new device.

Neovasc Inc. announced that its Tiara transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) device and its Neovasc Reducer device for the treatment of refractory angina were highlighted in presentations at the CSI Frankfurt 2019 conference, June 26-29, in Frankfurt, Germany.

South Australian researchers are developing a tiny fiber-optic sensor, which has the potential to change the way blood flow is monitored. The device is so small that it can potentially be used to monitor newborn and premature babies.

Berkeley, Calif.-based digital health company Eko unveiled an investigational aortic stenosis (AS) detection algorithm at the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) 2019 Scientific Sessions, June 21-25 in Portland, Ore., aimed to assist healthcare providers in the early detection of clinically significant AS.

Jonathon A. Leipsic, M.D., FSCCT, is the recipient of the 2019 DeHaan Award for Innovation in Cardiology, announced by the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT). Leipsic will present the second Dehaan Award Lecture at the SCCT 14th Annual Scientific Meeting, July 11-14 in Baltimore. The award, presented by the Jon DeHaan Foundation, includes a $200,000 grant.

This 360 degree photo shows a basic, point-of-care cardiac echocardiogram being performed using a smartphone turned into an ultrasound platform using an app and the Butterfly iQ transducer. The system allows inexpensive access to an easy-to-use ultrasound system to better triage patients and determine if more advanced imaging exams or emergency procedures are required. The system has apps for more than 20 types of ultrasound exams, including lung, heart, liver, vascular, MSK and abdominal.

This is a 360 degree view of a live cardiac echo demonstration for the Siemens Healthineers Acuson SC2000 cardiovascular ultrasound system at the 2019 American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) meeting. The system is Siemens' flagship echocardiography system and the main focus of demos at ASE were on its advanced assessment capabilities for valves and structural heart evaluations.
