December 7, 2016 — Abiomed Inc. announced it has expanded its U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) pre-market approval (PMA) for Impella heart pump use in high-risk percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) to include the Impella CP heart pump. The Impella heart pumps provide the only minimally invasive treatment option with the unique ability to stabilize the patient's hemodynamics and unload the left ventricle of the heart, which allows the muscle to rest and recover its native function.


December 7, 2016 — Teleflex Inc. and Vascular Solutions Inc. announced that the companies have entered into a definitive agreement under which Teleflex will acquire Vascular Solutions in a transaction valued at about $1 billion. Vascular Solutions focuses on developing clinical solutions for minimally invasive coronary and peripheral vascular procedures. The company’s product line consists of more than 90 proprietary products and services that are sold to interventional cardiologists, interventional radiologists, electrophysiologists and vein specialists.


December 7, 2016 — At the 102nd Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the separately managed healthcare business of Siemens AG presented itself for the first time under its new brand name, Siemens Healthineers. The company featured several new releases, including two new features on the PURE platform for Siemens’ Artis zee, Artis Q and Artis Q.zen angiography systems.

December 6, 2016 — The Spectranetics Corp. announced in late November that its Stellarex 0.014-inch drug-coated angioplasty balloon (DCB) has received the CE mark. The device is designed to treat small vessels, below-the-knee disease and challenging critical limb ischemia (CLI) in patients. 

Researchers at Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane, Australia, have demonstrated that cardiac amyloidosis (abnormal deposits of proteins in the heart), which is notoriously difficult to diagnose, can be visualized noninvasively with positron emission tomography (PET) using the radiotracer fluorine-18 (F-18)-florbetaben. The study is published in the November issue of The Journal of Nuclear Medicine.

December 2, 2016 — Edwards Lifesciences Corp. announced this week it has agreed to acquire Valtech Cardio Ltd., a privately held company based in Israel and developer of the Cardioband System for transcatheter repair of the mitral and tricuspid valves. The acquisition will give Edwards access to the Cardioband Reconstruction System (Cardioband) for transcatheter repair of the mitral valve and tricuspid valve of the heart.
