December 29, 2020 — Edwards Lifesciences announced Dec. 21 that the first patient was treated in the RESTORE clinical trial, which is evaluating the safety and effectiveness of the investigational Harpoon Beating Heart Mitral Valve Repair System in the United States and Canada.Â
The Harpoon transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVR) system uses a less-invasive technique than open-heart surgery in order to treat severe degenerative mitral valve regurgitation.Â

December 29, 2020 — Health Canada has approved the expanded use of the Edwards Lifesciences Sapien 3 and Sapien 3 Ultra transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) heart valves for the transfemoral treatment of patients diagnosed with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis who are at low risk for open-heart surgery.Â
The Sapien 3 valves are the first transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) systems to have this indication in Canada.

December 23, 2020 — Three clinical trial platforms working together to test the effects of full doses of anticoagulants in COVID-19 patients have paused enrollment for one group of patients. Among critically ill COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) patients requiring intensive care unit (ICU) support, therapeutic anticoagulation drugs did not reduce the need for organ support. Enrollment continues for moderately ill hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the trials.Â
